City of MANILA: Karen Ibasco

Describe your childhood/growing years (8-13 years old)
If I could explain my childhood years in a word, it would be memorable. I grew up with a loving and supportive family. My siblings and I may not have the same interests in life but my parents never failed to show their care, guidance in every way and leading us to trust in Jesus Christ no matter what circumstances we go through in life.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I have learned not to compare myself with others and also to put God as my top priority and in all my priorities.

Most memorable moment
It is when the time came that my name was called by the department head to come up on stage to award me my bachelor’s degree with my parents being there with me to hand me a bronze medal and the whole College of Science cheering upon calling my name. It added so much memory when I graduated as a part of the quadricentennial (400th year) batch from the University of Santo Tomas which happens only once every century. I was truly honored because I never anticipated myself graduating with such a degree. God truly uses an ordinary person such as me to show His strength in man’s weakness for His glory.

What is the most unusual thing you've ever done?
To be honest, it would be taking up an undergraduate course in applied physics which I never thought even existed at that time but I never imagined it would open doors of opportunity for me in this field of study because I was never academically inclined back in high school.

What is your ambition in life?
I wanted to become a doctor when I was younger to help the people who are sick. Never have I imagined I will still end up helping patients as a medical physicist.

Why do you want to be Miss Philippines Earth?
I want to be Miss Philippines Earth 2017 because I know I could use this platform to share my voice, advocacy and to be a good example to everyone as I share and live a message of hope that we can all work together as a community to save our planet Earth.

What is your environmental advocacy and why did you choose this?
As a physicist, I understand the importance of daily consumption of energy that is why my environmental advocacy is the conservation of energy and to embrace renewable and sustainable sources of energy in exchange for fossil fuel, which contributes to a huge percentage in global warming.
